What is Eco Printing?

In short; Eco Printing creates (more or less perfect) prints of leaves, using the natural pigments, tannins and acids present in leaves, by combining them with mordants, moisture and heat on fabric.

The use of natural dyes for importing colour on the fabrics has been there for more than 5000 years now. Eco Printing is a term which is in rage now and was coined by the textile artist India Flint.Over the last decade this style of imparting colour onto the fabrics has become very popular across the world.

In today’s world where people are becoming more and more conscious of the choices they make, living in a sustainable and mindful way is becoming a norm. Doing things with your hands is joyful and touches the soul,Eco printing is one way of doing it and being connected to nature.

Eco printing is a craft activity and the more you delve into it, its a science about plants, minerals, fibres and how they interact with each other. It is an ecologically sustainable way of imparting leaf colour on textiles, paper, wood, leather and many other such natural objects.

I would say the trained knowledge of it is more about organic chemistry and the natural acids and compounds which are present in nature.

To me personally Eco printing is becoming textile alchemy or alchemy of natural dyes!
